Understanding Perimenopause

We often hear older women complaining about hot flushes, irritability, depression and a host of other physical and emotional discomforts. In such instances, it is common to assume that a woman is in her menopausal stage. Even before we speak of this life-changing event however, it is equally crucial to talk about perimenopause.  “What?” you ask, “There’s another one before we even get to menopause?” For many, it may simply be just a case of terminology, but understanding perimenopause can be important when take into consideration the things we have to do and the food we have to take.

What it is

Basically, perimenopause is that period before a woman’s actual menopause. You are not really in a state of menopause yet until that day when you have gone through twelve months straight without having your period. In a sense, perimenopause is already the stage when you are undergoing the usual symptoms associated with the menopausal stage. At this point you may experience the well known hot flushes plus a variety of other symptoms which may affect your body, mind and emotions. The experience of perimenopause however is vastly different for each woman. Some may experience very limited discomforts. Others may have periods of great discomfort but may last for only some time before entering menopause. Because, perimenopause is not the same for everybody, it can last anywhere from 3 years to 15! Its onset also differs among women. Some may experience it as early as their 30’s to as late as their 50s.

Why we need to know about it

There is a great need to be educated about the experience of perimenopause not only for women but for the men in their lives too. Imagine having to go through such a phase for more than 3 years without truly knowing what’s going on! Knowing the signs and symptoms will help both men and women understand why certain physical and psychological changes are happening. Advanced knowledge about this normal phase in a woman’s life will also help people discover what can and should be done.

What can be done about it

Of course, the natural and proper first reaction would be to consult your doctor. You may opt for therapy or medication to help alleviate the symptoms. For many however, the experience of perimenopause can be made easier through years of proper diet and exercise. For some, living through years of fruits, vegetables and calcium and vitamin rich food can make all the difference. It may also be good for others to engage in some physical exercise or some meditation. As already mentioned however, the experience of perimenopause can vary for each individual. As such, your doctor may simply know best as to what may suit you.
